What will happen to car registration numbers in 2010?

From September 2001 registration plates have been displayed as two letters and two numbers. Between Sept 2001 and Sept 2009 if the first number was a ‘0’ then the car was registered in the first half of the year, if the first number was a ‘5’ then the car was registered in the second half of the year. The second number indicated the year of registration, so CV56 would indicate that the car was registered during the later part of 2006.

The digits for the new March 2010 registration plate will be displayed as follows.

In September 2010 the same plate would read CV60 DAY , In March 2011 it would read CV11 DAY and in September 2011 it would read CV61 DAY.

The DVLA have advised that this pattern will continue until all permutations are exhausted.
